Do you feel the need? The need… for speed.

Hello friends! Here at the Mark and Steve Video Game Testing Center, driving games are often ignored in favor of games that are actually fun. Midnight Club: Los Angeles, however, piqued our interest. We posted about it awhile back, but since then, Kotaku has written a nice hands-on impression of the game and a second trailer has been released!

A new release date in October has been solidified, pushed back from September and the L.A. in the game is looking even more accurate than before. We personally are looking forward to reenacting the many accidents at the cursed corner of La Brea and Fountain.

How many L.A. landmarks can you spot whizzing by in the new trailer?

Won’t eat prunes again!

British rockers, The Who are playing a private show at the Orpheum to promote the coming of Mark and Steve’s new favorite game; Rock Band 2! Also, you can download a Best of the Who song pack for Rock Band right now!

From Reuters:

The party and concert, organized by the game’s developer Harmonix Music Systems and publisher MTV Games, will take place at the 82-year-old Orpheum Theatre, which holds about 2,000 people.

The Who’s 1971 anthem “Won’t Get Fooled Again” is among the 58 tracks on the set list of “Rock Band,” which was released to great acclaim late last year.

UPDATE 7/17/2008: Brian Crecente, from awesome gaming site, Kotaku, attended the concert and posted lots of pictures, impressions and even some videos here!

From his article:

Later Townshend said that everyone should buy their children the new Aerosmith Guitar Hero bundle, then a second later added, oh, that’s the other one.

Awesome

"Snake? Snaaaake!"

Hello friends! Tonight at midnight, Metal Gear Solid 4 finally comes out for the PS3! Several Gamestops and Best Buys will be open at midnight to sell the game to rabid fans who have been waiting years to virtually sneak around a war zone and punch some dude in the crotch… for only $59.99!

The most notable launch event, in our opinion, takes place at 11:45 pm - 1:00am tonight at the Best Buy on La Brea and Santa Monica. The voice of Solid Snake, L.A. native David Hayter, will be signing copies of the game. Also signing are Producer Kenichiro Imaizum and Associate Producer Ryan Payton.

Get in line soon!

Another Glorious Victory for Citizen Journalism

Greetings, programs. As you may remember, a few weeks ago I brought you a heartbreaking photograph of the saddest arcade in the world.

Tucked into a nook in the new Pacific Theatres at the Americana at Brand in Glendale, underneath an Art Deco sign that teased “Arcade,” sat a lonely Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga “Class of 1981″ machine and an even lonelier try-your-luck “Movie Stop” DVD dispenser.

You couldn’t imagine a more tragic visual to illustrate the neglected state of the American video game arcade. Realizing that future generations would want to know exactly when and where arcades died, I pulled out my trusty camera and recorded the scene for posterity.

Three weeks later, I’m happy to report that the situation has, to paraphrase Delbert Grady from the Overlook Hotel, “been corrected.”

Yes, Pacific Theatres has finally given visitors to their multiplex an arcade befitting the A-class experience synonymous with the name Caruso Affiliated.

Behold!

arcade1

What exactly are we looking at? Why, it’s a vintage cabinet for 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Super Bikes, a fast-paced motorcycle game by Raw Thrills/Universal. I wonder if there’s any connection between this game and the obscure 1955 Roger Corman-produced drag-racing film?

At this point I began feeling woozy. Before I could even register what was happening, I passed out.

That’s not all folks! More pics after the jump.

The Saddest Arcade in the World

Today I went to Pacific Theaters at the Americana to watch Iron Man. Fantastic movie!

Then as I was exiting the theater, I saw a sign reading “ARCADE” hanging above a door.

Wow, I thought, a great comic book movie followed by an honest-to-goodness video game arcade? I felt ten years old all over again.

Then, after going through the door, this is what I saw:

sad arcade

No, that’s not a corner of the arcade. That’s the whole damn thing. One lousy Ms. PacMan/Galaga 20th Anniversary “Class of 1981″ machine, and a “try your luck” game called Movie Stop.

I’m not even going to bother offering a larger version of that JPEG. It’s just too damn painful.

Now You’re Rockin’ With Power

minibosses
In Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar’s latest entry in their mega popular video game franchise, protagonist Niko Bellic has 15 radio stations at his disposal in his (stolen) car stereo. Hear a song you like? Just have Niko use his in-game cellphone to dial a number, and you’ll receive a real-world email with information on the song, artist, and how you can purchase the music.

Did somebody say, ” El yawn-o?”

This is the sorry state of video game soundtracks today. Bleep bloop has given way to silly marketing campaigns.

But have no fear, the Minibosses are here! More specifically, they’ll be at downtown’s The Smell this Saturday night, playing with Totally Radd!!, Fatigo, and Bossk.

Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, the Minibosses are a hard-rockin’ Nintendo cover band whose setlists are exclusively comprised of soundtracks from games from the NES, Nintendo’s 8-bit console from the ’80s.

What are you doing April 29th?

Hello friends!

The giant space on the side of Hotel Figueroa in Downtown L.A., usually reserved for boring sports themed advertisements, is, for now, promoting something near and dear to us in the Mark and Steve labs.

No, not lollipops, Grand Theft Auto IV!

How fun is it to see things you’re actually excited about being advertised, triple-monolith style?

We can’t wait to act our deepest, darkest fantasies… sleeping with prostitutes, putting on cut-off gloves and talking on cell phones while holding a fistful of cash.

For more pictures, here’s a link to the article on Kotaku.

88 miles per hour!

Hello friends! Have you ever fantasized about zipping through the L.A. streets at speeds topping 100mph in broad daylight? We certainly do, especially when we’re stuck in L.A.’s famous traffic rather than at home playing video games on our awesome Playstation 3s.

Well, come September, Rockstar Games will make all our dreams come true when they release the fourth video game in the Midnight Club series, Midnight Club: Los Angeles!

(click if you mean bigness!)

Check out the trailer and more screen shots here!

From the press release on Business Wire:

“People are going to be blown away when they see how true-to-life Los Angeles looks in this game,” said Jay Panek, Midnight Club Producer Rockstar San Diego. “We’ve added some great twists and turns that let players experience the authentic vibe and feel of the city at blistering speeds that you simply couldn’t get away with in real life.”

We’re hoping the recreation is so accurate that we can try out new shortcuts to the Arclight and then test them out five minutes before the movie starts!
