He did it. Quick matchbook math on that says he did one tattoo every 1.6 minutes to pull that off. Which seems about right, I was there at midnight and had an appointment to be in the first hour (because who wants to be in the last hour?!) and was the 12th person to get tattooed. It was kind of a madhouse:

I got these two and he spent about a minute and 10 seconds or so on each. Maybe. Same for the friends I went with so he was off to a good pace. It was super fun to be a part of the event, congrats Jeremy!

I had it on my calendar and then I simply forgot to look and missed it. I was really looking forward to this because while I’ve seen his works previously at earlier Subliminal Projects exhibitions I was tipped off that this one takes a whole new direction and blows the older works out of the water. Since I really like the older works, that sounds exciting.

Luckily the show runs all month (until Dec 5th) so I’m going to make sure to see it. If anyone else made it to the opening or saw it this weekend I’d love to hear what you thought!

Yesterday afternoon there was a shooting in Venice, followed up by another in Santa Monica last night. Both shootings left one victim dead and countless others terrified. The LA Times Blog has lots of details on the actual shootings but makes no mention that these were both gang related shootings, a fact the LAPD confirmed with Yo! Venice. Residents of the area heard shots and began questioning things right away. A source which asked not to be named told me that both the victim in the first shooting in Venice and the shooters who were apprehended in the second shooting in Santa Monica are members of the Venice Shoreline Crips. The LAPD hasn’t confirmed that publicly yet however. If you’ve been following this at all you’ll remember that last year a huge sting brought down 19 members and earlier this year I spotted some of their tags on a wall in the area. Clearly the busts didn’t eradicate the gang as was hoped by many, and clearly something is going down right now. Hopefully it gets under control before more people get shot.

UPDATE: Here’s an eye witness report from Bujinkan Santa Monica.

Matt Schrader spent a few months talking to people about the street cleaning policy in LA – both the people who are in charge of it and the people effected by it. Turns out you are much more likely to get a ticket then you are to actually have your street swept.

If you get a ticket for parking in a no-parking-because-of-street-sweeping zone, and they don’t ever bother to sweet the street, should that ticket be void?

Have a super awesome Halloween costume that you plan to keep forever? Then skip this post, it’s not for you. Our friends at NeighborGoods are having a Halloween Costume Party on Friday that is a little different – you have to bring a costume (don’t wear it) and throw it in a pile with a bunch of other costumes other people brought and then dig through it and find a new one for yourself. It’s crazy for sure, but it’s the NeighborGoods way – and besides it’s a much better use than just throwing that old costume away. There is only limited space and it’s for members of the site only so go sign up if you want in!

First of all it sounds really good, like, there hasn’t been a Hip Hop record I’ve enjoyed this much in a while good. Secondly, they have a great sense of humor about what they are doing and are clearly having a good time. Thirdly they never shut up about Los Angeles, which ranks really high in my book. But fourthly, and perhaps coolest of all is that they did this all themselves and are taking some very fun and new approaches to releasing a record. For instance, you can buy the record and download it, or have it sent to you on a UZI shaped USB stick. If you pass it on to some friends with twitter or facebook you get a huge discount, etc. Now I already got the thing as a promo for free weeks ago so this isn’t a post to scam that, but it’s a super fun record about LA from an LA band that if you dig hip hop you’ll probably get a kick out of. That’s all I’m saying. Moar pix after the jumps.

Coffee geeks know that the Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama is one bad ass cup of coffee. So bad ass that if you are lucky enough to find it for sale, you can expect to pay upwards of $100 a pound for the beans. A single cup is over $10. If you’ve tasted it, you know it’s totally worth it. If you haven’t, well tomorrow if your lucky day! Both Intelligentsia locations (Silver Lake and Venice) will be doing a free tasting that if you like coffee, you really really don’t want to miss. Swing through Venice between 4-6pm, or Silver Lake anytime after 1pm to have a cup and talk to Devin or Chris, resident experts who can tell you all about this super rare coffee. More details on the Intelligentsia blog.

By Halloween party of course I mean rock show. Thursday, October 29th at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock The Night Marchers will be playing with Jail Weddings, SeaSpin, Night Horse and a bunch of other random halloween themed spooky shit. This is being put on by the folks at Buddyhead and FYF Fest and while most people have to pay to get in, I’ve got 2 pair of tickets to give away. They could be yours. Want them? Usually I’d come up with some witty trivia or something but you would probably just google it and then try to pretend like you already knew it which would just be a bummer for everyone involved so forget that. Use the comments to tell me why you should get the tickets, I’ll pick two people who either convince me or at random if everyone has lame reasons. I’m not setting a deadline either, but since this is happening Thursday night I’ll probably pick them soon so don’t sit around trying to think of something super crafty to write and then miss out. Go!

Yes, Mister Jalopy is going to be opening up his top secret workshop in hopes of benefiting Machine Project. As Machine Project is a non-profit community organization, 90% of your ticket price (which ranges from $75-$250 depending on what you are hoping to get hooked up with) is tax deductible. I rarely post about fund raisers but having seen this elusive workshop, and knowing the folks behind this I’d say even at $250 it’s a steal, and you are helping support a year full of bad ass programming at MP. I might buy two tickets, just so I could have an excuse to go, leave, put on a fake mustache and then go back again!

If you follow me on twitter then you’ve heard me ranting about this already, but Hi Hollywood has just been released and I have to say it’s a must read for anyone who works in the movie industry, does not work in the movie industry, enjoys watching movies, has seen a movie or has not seen a movie but is seriously considering it. While at face value this book is a collection of proposed movie treatments, if you peel back a few layers you find it has a much bigger purpose, and a much loftier goal. From the publishers description:

This book is about the magic of movies. About reaching to a higher standard. About daring to dream. About making movies awesome again. We dare you to read any one of the potential oscar winners presented here in rough treatment format and say that they wouldn’t be awesome movies. We fucking dare you.

It starts off with ‘Brunch of the Dead’ a radically new approach to the zombie genre, and movies quickly into ‘Disaster’ a film I’m sure every person who has ever enjoyed an on screen explosion would kill to see. Things get romantical with ‘Garbage Dude’ and ‘80 Foot Hamster’ is a story about cold blooded revenge that even the most kind hearted hippy could relate to. And that is just the beginning, I could go on and on, but that would just take time away that could be spent reading it on your own. And since it’s a free downloadable ebook you really have no reason not to. So what are you waiting for?
