Shadow play

Sometimes, I feel like I’m the only person who ever has noticed the large ‘Jesus Saves’ sign downtown. When I point it out, people often ask me how long it’s been there. I shrug. I have no idea. Seems like forever to me. It stands out to my eye, but I guess to others it’s just more sight pollution; one more ad, one more neon sign.

Today, while walking down Broadway, I saw it from a different angle. The sun hitting the sign was too perfect not to capture. (It looked better in real life, trust me.)

As I walked on south, I turn around to shoot more photos of my beloved Eastern building. Imagine my surprise as I noticed the shadow of the sign on the adjacent building.

I am not a Christian, so this is more luck of the time of day for me. But for the lady at the bus stop who saw it when I pointed it out to my husband, it seemed to mean a lot to her; like she needed it.

As a kid I remember the sign on top of a building near the 110 fwy. Sometime in the 80’s the building that it sat on was going to be demolished along with the sign. The late Dr. Gene Scott bought the sign and had it moved to his ministries at The United Artist Building. It’s been there since

The Jesus Saves sign is one of my favorite hidden treasures of downtown. It originated with the Church of the Open Door whose building, completed in 1916 was located on Hope Street next to the Central Library. As dj ernie pearl said, it was torn down in 1985, but on the ground floor of the high rise built in its place you’ll find a small room inside which a video plays detailing the history of the site. The room’s door never closes.

Thanks for the historical updates! I had no idea it had been around that long. Neat.

in the interest of fairness/equal time, they should add underneath: “But Moses Invests.” Or “… and Kopitar Scores on the Rebound.”

I’m not religious at all, but that’s a beautiful shot. My favorite downtown gem is the Eastern Bldg clock. At night, it’s just spectacular.
