Pour Some Sugar On Me
For reasons I’m too ashamed to tell anyone outside of the deepest most inner circle of my friends, I can no longer show my face at my former hair salon and therefore must reluctantly begin the tiresome process of finding a new home for my hair. Silver Lake may be brimming with totally tantalizing eats, mega hip bars and the best in indie fashion, but one thing that seems to be lacking in my neighborhood is a wide selection of high quality, cutting edge hair salons.
Perhaps hair is the one area where the west side has us beat.
Having walked and scooted by Sugar Hair Salon in Silver Lake dozens of times, I randomly chose this beacon in blue and white as the first stop on my quest for maximum coiffage.
Adriana Rodriguez, co-owner of Sugar, greeted me and immediately began assessing my poorly shaped locks, which had become shamefully sloppy from mad neglect. While we discussed my hair preferences, my eyes were drawn to a giant wall of paintings and other media across the salon.
Adriana explained that the wall is part of a collection called, “100″ featuring 100 square feet of art, by 100 Los Angeles-based artists, all for under $100. How rad is that? Apparently, I missed the opening in late February, but the pieces will be on display in the salon through May 24, 2009.

Now back to my all important hair. For this mission, I brought along friend of the blog, Daniel H. to document my before and after results (this is where I mention that all photographs appearing in this entry are courtesy of Daniel Hengeveld). Adriana graciously allowed us free run of the salon, as we transformed the place into the virtual set of the MissRFTC show. She even invited Daniel H. to use their free Wifi while he waited for her to craft my new do.
And craft my new do she did – quite well (see before and after pictures below). In fact, I’m so pleased with the outcome, I have suspended my search for a new hair salon indefinitely. While Adriana is for sure going to be my new stylist, I should note that another friend of the blog, John W. highly recommends Tommy, whose profile on Sugar’s web site describes him as, “the founding father of Sugar.” Tommy launched the shop back in 2000, digs talking about motorcycles, listening to great music and making people look good.

Well, I get my hairs cut at Tony’s next to the KFC on Glendale Boulevard. No art to speak of on the walls. He did used to have a nice photo collage of Mayor Villaraigosa, but that came down after ‘Tonio copped to his affair. Anyway, I (obvioulsy) don’t know nothing when it comes to high falutin’ hair salons. Glad you found one that hopefully reinstills your belief that the only thing the westside kicks ass over is its proximity to the ocean.

wow… I love any business that showcases local artists. These ladies deserve a big round of applause! Next time I’m in that ‘hood will need to sneak in and see what is there.

Is it wrong that while I obviously see the difference in the "after" pic (and it looks great,) I kinda like the Beatles mop-toppish look in the "before," too?
