Indie 103.1 was corporate from day one. They played some decent music for the most part, and had good branding.

The real independent rock station in LA is KXLU, 88.9. It’s also real college radio, unlike KCRW.

True story, lucindamichelle: about two weeks ago, I was having one of those days where the radio was just pissing me off. I kept punching through my presets and couldn’t get anything good, so I hit the [scan] button.

The station it stopped on, that played music that didn’t piss me off? It was 98.7.

I know they changed format and everything, but boy did I feel old and lame when that happened. I switched it off in horror and shuffled the Left of the Dial box set on my iPod for the rest of the day.

Have no fear, I’m sure Clear Channel will attempt to follow the skinny-pantsed, geeky-bespectacled dollars on this one.

At least, that’s what I’m…guessing.

Honestly, though, I wonder if 987 will step in earnestly and really try to woo this audience. I guess we’ll see. I’m watching what unfolds with interest.

I really can’t believe this is happening – in terms of over-the-air radio, this basically leaves me with KCRW.

I hope they keep going online (which they’ve said they’re going to). One better would be if they developed iPhone and other phone apps like Pandora and Last.FM. I’d gladly shell out $5 or $10 for an Indie 103.1 app.
