Classic Eats #2: Save The Date and VOTE!

Happy 2009!

We are going to kick the new year off right with another Classic Eats Event. The first event (last Novmeber) was a great success. We ate an early dinner at Clifton’s Cafeteria (The decor, the jello salads!) then moseyed over to the Bonaventure Hotel for cocktails high above Los Angeles (The view, the 80’s vibe!).

Classic Eats #2 is scheduled for Saturday January 24. The voting results will determine a gathering time/place. Voting? Yes! This time YOU get to decide where we will go. Please take a moment and vote below. The poll will remain open until Tuesday January 20. (Don’t worry if your choice doesn’t win this time, all options will remain for future Classic Eats.)

For info and links on all the choices, skip past the jump.

Dog Day Afternoon – Of all the things there are to argue about in LA (eastside/westside, car/bike, subway) nothing seems to get people’s dander up more than Pinks vs. Skooby’s. Will the argument be forever quieted if we all go for a final decision? Hell no. But it could be fun to try. And just to throw that LA curveball, Oki-Dog has been included. (Bring your own Pepto.)

Old Hollywood Cocktails – You’ve driven past Musso & Frank Grill on Hollywood Blvd, you’ve seen it in the movies and it’s been around since 19 freakin’ 19! Have you ever gone in?  The Formosa cafe has *only* been around since 1939 and has landmark status.

Giant Donuts – LA is not about subtlety. Hence the donut shops that sport GIANT DONUTS as part of their architecture. Randy’s is near LAX and Donut King II is on Western and was recently visited by a few intrepid Metblog readers/writers. And while the Donut Hole in La Puente fits into this category, it is a bit out of the way. We’ll have to go on a special trip!

Downtown Delights – Many of you ride the rails in LA so you have probably been to/through Union Station a few times. It’s like stepping back in time. Phillipe’s is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, so let’s go dipping!

French Polynesia – Taix French Restaurant has been serving LA families since 1927 and is still family owned and operated. Tiki Ti is old school, not so old in age (only 45) but in style: Cash only, open when they feel like it, you can smoke inside, more than 80 wacky tropical drinks on the menu, etc. Whenever we end up going to Tiki Ti, we better get their early with fistfuls of cash.

I had a blast at the November Classic Eats, and have been looking forward to the next installment. There are some great choices up there. Some I’ve been to and love, some I’ve been meaning to try forever, and at least one or two that scare the hell out of me (Oki-Dog?) Sadly, I am not going to be able to make the date for this one, so I’m going to abstain from voting. I definitely recommend the Classic Eats meet-up for everyone, though. A great time will be had by all.

Oki Dog is either awesome or awesomely scary. There is something about sticking two hot dogs slabbed with pastrami rolled in a tortilla that makes you feel dumb for not having thought of this before.

Phillipes has been on our list of places to get to FOREVER. If it win we’re in. Of course all depends on where we are for tournaments that weekend.

If the hot dog and donut places are outdoor seating/standing, I’d say let’s wait until there’s no worry of Old Man Winter suddenly blowing in on us (even though this weekend has been perfect).

OK, I love Pink’s and if this is a family-friendly outing, I hope Pink’s wins because we’ll all be there! But if not, I’ve been to Musso and Frank’s, The Formosa, Randy’s Donuts, Union Station and Phillipe’s, and I would be happy going to any of them again, or to any of the others I’ve never been to. Sounds fun!!

PINK’S IS EVIL IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SCOOBY’S

That is all I have to say.

All of these sound like a blast, although I’m campaigning for the hot dog city tour. I’ll bring the Pepto Bismol!

Julia, great job organizing this event and with your post. I was at the last event, and can vouch for the fact that it was a blast. I’m voting for the hot dog tour for no apparent reason, but I look forward eventually to checking out all of these places, none of which I have been to!

  9. Julia Frey (lajulia) on January 11th, 2009 @ 9:46 pm

Thanks Matt, I really appreciate the kind words! It’s going to be so much fun, no matter where we go!

Actually, I have been to Randy’s Donuts. More than once. Mmmm. I think I may be responsible for having it on the list.

I’m biased because it was my suggestion, but I hope that the Taix/Tiki Ti combo picks up some more points. Taix is one of those places Angelenos really should check out but probably never will, and Tiki Ti might actually be the most awesome place in the city. The rest of those venues are definitely classics, but seem like stuff that people already frequent pretty regularly.

  12. Burns! (burns) on January 12th, 2009 @ 3:18 pm

Even though I’m not voting, if I were, I’d throw my lot in with Spencer. I’ve wanted to go to Taix for a long time and never have (yet.) Also, while I’ve only been to Tiki Ti a couple of times, I can confirm that it is certainly among the most awesome places in the city.

Don’t forget this is NOT a one-time event! So even if your choice doesn’t get picked for January, there is always February’s Classic Eats Event, and March and April and etc etc etc. We will get to Taix and Tiki Ti, I promise!
