Rick Warren visits West Hollywood

Rick Warren (Saddleback Church pastor and same-sex marriage opponent) stopped by the Out of the Closet thrift shop in West Hollywood yesterday as part of his PR tour in preparation for his moment next month in the national spotlight when he will recite a prayer at Obama’s inauguration.

Lord knows (literally) what Rick Warren is thinking. Is this a person in the throws of megalomania? Or is he just the latest famous-for-15-minutes celebrity oddity who before long will shuffle off the cultural radar to write another religious screed to keep his flock from straying, hoping to keep them baffled and fearful about the pursuit of happiness of those who think differently than they do?

Consider the evidence:

Warren  has been launched into the media stratosphere, basking in the attention of everyone from Charlie Rose and major news organizations to the gossip-mongering TMZ website.

Preening and waxing eloquently, he releases a video in which he accuses gays of using “hate speech” against him and calls gays and lesbians “Christ-ophobes.”

In damage control mode, he scrubs anti-gay rhetoric from his church’s website comparing pedophilia and incest to being gay, saying he “didn’t mean it.”

He meets with Melissa Ethridge to tell her he is a huge fan of her music, but, in the eyes of his lord, her marriage to her partner is not equal to his marriage to his wife. (Steve Young suspects she’s been flim-flammed, but holds out hope it may improve her CD sales.)

He recently reaffirms his opposition to same-sex marriage in crude, contorted analogies:

From an interview on Beliefnet.com:

… I’m opposed to having a brother and sister being together and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.

Do you think those are equivalent to gays getting married?

Oh , I do.

Stay tuned.

[...] friend Chal Pivik at LA Metroblogs recently pointed out that Rick has wandered blindly out of Orange County and has somehow stumbled into West Hollywood. [...]

I can’t help thinking that Melissa Ethridge would make a better preacher too. God knows she has him beat in the ethics department already.

If I were religious I would definitely attend a church that Melissa Ethridge was preaching at! Can you imagine how much the hymns would rock?
