I just purchased a bike and had to read up on the cycling ordinances in Burbank. Sidewalk biking is generally allowed. And, since my bike doesn't yet have lights and reflectors for night riding, the sidewalks are my best option for getting to the gym or the library. Plus, citywide accessibility requirements mean ramps at every intersection. Yay.

However, some areas of Burbank (the downtown shopping area, for instance) have signs posted where bicycles on the sidewalk are forbidden. They're also typically the areas that have the most foot traffic and where they've added designated bike lanes/paths.

As Ben pointed out above, the sidewalks are a legal option to cyclists in Los Angeles. Of interest: the city of Santa Monica has a law against bikes on the sidewalks. So does West Hollywood -- or maybe DID because I recently read the WeHo council is repealing the ordinance, or planning to.

As a creature of the streets, I ride on sidewalks only when I'm left with no other choice, such as in the case of bypassing an obstruction or avoiding a high-risk situation. And I do so with the utmost concern for the pedestrians I encounter by traveling slowly and if necessary announcing my presence either verbally or with a ring of my bell.

I'm sorry Mark or Steve or both of you encountered some rude daredevil. They're certainly out there, but so are those of us who travel with respect and consideration so try to contain a bias that perpetuates all of us as dangerous, foolhardy and inconveniencing.

From:

"In Los Angeles, municipal code states that bicycles may ride on sidewalks as long as riders do not have a "willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property." The only sidewalk in the city where it is illegal to ride is on Ocean Front Walk in Venice."
