Citizen Journalism Academy strikes Los Angeles, Saturday, June 28th

The Society of Professional Journalists [1] will be holding a day of workshops for citizen and community journalists this Saturday at Loyola Law School in downtown LA.

Through its Citizen Journalism Academy, SPJ seeks to help everyone wanting to practice journalism to do so accurately, ethically and fairly. The Society aims to help participants understand how responsible practices could increase their reach and help them have strong journalistic reputations within their communities and around the world.

Topics include media law basics, journalism ethics, and “Reporting/Writing Basics,” which I’ll be presenting with Steve Rhodes from Chicago’s Beachwood Reporter [2]. For my part, I’m hoping to delve into how writing for blogs and online is different than writing for mainstream and print. From the importance of a headline and lede, to the presentation of information, to the critical “CYA”* of citations and links.

Eric Richardson from BlogDowntown [3] will also be on hand during an end of day TechJam, and I hear other notable LA bloggers will be in attendance to provide heckling… I’ll update when names are confirmed.

Registration is $25 [4], and includes lunch, with today being the”official” deadline. If you want to register Tuesday or later, call 317-927-8000 to ensure space is available. Tell them I sent you.

*CYA: Cover Your Ass.
