What if California Held an Election Tomorrow and Nobody Came?

Are you voting in California’s statewide primary election tomorrow?  Did you even know we were having one?

Tomorrow’s primary election contains two Propositions, Prop 98 and Prop 99.  The Official Voter Information Guide mailed to residents by the State of California describes both Propositions as involving “eminent domain,” the government’s taking of private property for a ”public use.” Prop 98 seems to be getting the most attention.  AARP describes it as “a deceptive measure placed on the ballot by wealthy apartment and mobile home park landlords.”  The League of Women Voters of California states that “[h]idden provisions eliminate rent control and renter protections, jeopardize environmental protections and threaten other laws that protect our communities.”  Yikes.

I plan to do some studying tonight, and some voting tomorrow.  How about you?

Yep, in the no and no camp as well. What I do is mail back the request for the ballot and they send it to me so I can vote from home. Easy and on my time.

Although this Novemeber I may stroll down to the local ballot box for the full effect of what I hope to be a historical election.

Nathan, I’m a "permanent mail-in" voter as well, which is a really convenient option, except that this is the 2nd time in a row that I neglected to mail in my ballot in advance. However, I can fill out the ballot that is mailed to me, and then drop it off at my local polling place, which I also enjoy, as long as it’s not too crowded. I suspect it won’t be very crowded there tomorrow.

No, because I will be attending the WWE Smackdown tv tapings at the Staples Center instead. Ooooh Yeah!

    Matt,

If you still have the purple envelope they sent you, sign the back and put your completed ballot in it, and you won’t have to stand in line at your precinct – you can just walk up to the Ballot Box Clerk and give your ballot to them.

Thanks for the reminder. I really came close to forgetting that tomorrow is 2008 election day 2.0 (not to be confused with election day 1.0, back on "Super Tuesday," or election day 3.0 in November). I hope to beat my record for fewest voters in a precinct. I was the 9th and final voter one year. That is: only 9 people turned out to vote in that particular election, at that particular polling place.

Thanks Oren, that’s exactly the procedure I used on Super Tuesday and the one I’ll use tomorrow too.

[...] Eminent Domain reform is in the ballot today.  It is something I discussed in my “Don’t steal in my name” post on the topic a few months ago.  In it I gave the history of eminent domain and local alternatives.  Ruth 666 brought up some of the issues in Prop 98 with her post “Nice try, Prop 98“. Two measures on the ballot today were brought up yesterday by Matt telling you to just vote. I never received a sample ballot or election notification. Nice job, dummies. I’m gonna try to vote if I get out of work in time.
