my boyfriend once tried to get me to listen to beth orton by telling me that dave eggers said that he listened to her "sweetest decline" on loop, but could never manage figure it out. "a heartbreaking work of staggering genius" is his favorite book, but i stopped reading it when i got to the drawing of the stapler.

if we win these tickets, i promise to solve "sweetest decline" and finish reading "a heartbreaking work."

My wife and went to see Beth last year at the Avalon and she was sick with a bad cold and her voice was HORRIBLE, but to her credit, she really, really tried. But, the concert was BAD and we left early. We were sad because we both LOVE her and would like to see her again, but we felt a little cheated last time. So, we think we deserve some tickets. That’s our story and we’re sticking to it.

I can’t believe only three people have responded to this. Beth Orton is a musical goddess, I tell you! C’mon people!

Beth Orton reminds me of 8 years ago when I had just moved to Detroit. A couple friends and I saw her at St. Andrews Hall with about 50 other people and it was a great show. Afterwards we had a few drinks with the band, but I hadn’t noticed my petite blonde friend shooting them down. While walking out to the parking lot she was drunk and thought it would be a good idea to kick a glass bottle with her foot. However, she was wearing sandals and that bottle was already broken. Needless to say she cut her foot up badly. While I did live there and the rest of my friends were from up North, I hadn’t discovered where the hospitals were yet.

So we ended up getting lost pretty bad in a nasty neighborhood and every sign we followed that pointed towards a hospital went nowhere. They ended up just driving back home and hitting the emergency room there. She ended up cutting a bunch of tendons and wearing a cast over her foot for months. To this day whenever I move the first thing I look for is the location of the nearest hospital. Moral of the story: don’t kick glass bottles with open toed shoes.
