Small helicopter crashes on 110 Freeway at Century Blvd. - 1 dead
A “small, private type, possibly home made” helicopter crashed late Friday on the southbound 110 Freeway near Century Blvd., according to a message from LAFD spokesman Ron Myers.
When fire crews arrived, the aircraft was in flames and debris scattered over the freeway. All southbound lanes were closed, although ABC7 reports that some lanes have now been reopened.
Myers told the LA Times that the CHP and FAA would investigate.

Eh, its all relative. I amended the headline to reflect that. The location is 4 miles from LAX, but a straight shot on Century, thus my perception is skewed.

LAFD alert messages are indeed sent as preliminary information, often in the heat of battle.
Sometimes a simple comment by a witness or responder gathered within moments of the first 9-1-1 call or Firefighter arrival will make it into our ‘as we go’ alerts.
We do seek whenever possible or appropriate to follow up the alerts with relevant blog posts that offer greater detail, such as Ron’s article that he posted very early the next morning.
In retrospect, the wreckage of the Robinson R-22 could probably have been better summarized as an *apparent* kit-built’ or ’self-built’ helo. Of course be the tiny aircraft, bare distinguishable at the time of impact, was manufactured by a firm in Torrance.
