That fire map was created and is maintained by the LA Times, not Google.

Google Maps provides the tools (which anyone can access – see the “My Maps” tab on Google Maps), but the information was collected and mapped by staff at the Times.

Here’s another very nice interactive Google Map from San Diego Public Radio station KPBS, showing San Diego area fires. It not only maps the fire areas, but also shows evacuation areas and advisories, road closures and other incidents, and evacuation centers for both humans and large animals.
